Sabato 24 March – In procession for otters

A procession of citizens and associations who request the FVG region to adopt non-violent methods to eradicate nutria. Sabato 24 March is expected the meeting at 10.30 in Piazza della Borsa in Trieste, and the 11.00 will start the procession that will march through the streets to reach the headquarters of the Regional Council in Piazza Oberdan. In the bottom of the article describes some information for participants.

The Board Serracchiani has recently imposed a plan to eradicate nutria based exclusively his bloody methods. The decision to hold a regional foreign animal habitat is not in question, but it is unacceptable that violent methods are used when there are several effective methods sweets.

The otters can be trapped and killed today by gunfire or gas by some authorized persons. The decision to use these methods showed a lack of respect of rights that should be inviolable for all animals: the right to life and liberty.

We ask that the killing of the cute beavers be stopped for six reasons:

1. biological reason. The environmental conditions do not allow the eradication can be done by violent means. After demolition is observed the increase in the birth rate and the tendency of not leading male of the remaining colonies out of the territory where they were born and re-colonize the territories in which otters were taken and killed.
2. legal grounds. Nel 2016 otters have lost the protections provided for wildlife. However, the national legislature clearly guaranteed right to a final coypu; that eradication is carried out primarily without violence, and that only in case of ineffectiveness, Regions may approve reduction plans. Thus associations accuse a vice of illegality for judicial review of the Regional Council, and a contrast even with the Regional Law 20/2017 which provides as an option for the eradication also the methods provided by the scientific community.
3. contradictory. The abatement plan is based on an opinion of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, which, despite formal requests for access to documents, associations are unable to obtain. This mysterious opinion contrasts with other positions taken by ISPRA. The Institute leaders have proven often open to the colonies methods of control carried out by the sterilization of animals.

6. why democratic. 627 citizens of the region have presented a petition to the Region to demand that the otters are eradicated only through non-violent methods. As it was discussed the demand of the citizens in the relevant fora, logic would dictate that the council wait for the ruling of the Regional Council on a measure that decides on the life or death of thousands of animals of our land. But this did not happen, it is evident that the sop to regional hunters is more important than respect for democratic principles.

This lack distorts the entire construction of the opinion and it is clear that non-lethal methods are also possible to contain the number of otters.
