Bocciamo without hesitation the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia Draft Law on the eradication of coypu, from different points of view.
Ethically, we are opposed to killing animals whose only crime is being born in the wrong place because of some farmers, closed their fur farms, They abandoned to their fate hundreds of otters.
We believe that the containment of nutria go run by non-lethal methods, such as sterilization. Killing otters only leads to greater filiation by surviving examples, then moves the problem in time without resolving.
As for the economic damage caused by these rodents must be managed with ecological preventive methods already described in the distant ISPRA 2001, such as antinutria networks built to defend the banks or the pastoral electric protection of crops.
We denounce the fact that there are no specific site studies describing the risks due iteration with other animal and plant species. While in some cases these can be proven, the fact remains that the coypu can be moved to areas where they can do no harm.
The bill imposes on the whole region of the same size without distinguishing areas where nutria does damage from those where it could live together in harmony, if not an asset, as proposed in Muggia
A good law should think about living and contain non-native species (and indigenous peoples) rather than just manage quickly and a single emergency fury, among other things, in the absence of specific studies and reliable data, and particularly without first having tried preventive ecological measures.
